Regarding Solicitors

Summertime brings warmer weather, outdoor activities and, unfortunately, door-to-door solicitors.

If an unexpected solicitor comes to your door, use caution. Scammers may pose as salespeople, utility workers, or contractors to gain access to your home or personal information. “They were just in the neighborhood.”  “It’s hot out, can they come in and get a drink?”  “Their phone died, can they borrow yours?” etc…

You do not need to open your door to speak with someone. Never allow strangers inside your home unless you have verified who they are, but remember, credentials can be faked.

Communicate through a locked door, peephole, doorbell camera, or window when possible. Never provide personal information  or show utility bills to solicitors. Except for Official Census workers with proper ID, you are not obligated to answer any questions at all.

Post a “No Soliciting” sign prominently.

If a solicitor will not take no for an answer, is overly aggressive or something just doesn't seem right, trust your instincts and contact local law enforcement.

For Ashland County, Ohio, call the  Sheriff’s Office business line at 419-289-3911 (Opt. 9) and we will dispatch a deputy to investigate and have talk with the solicitor.

If you feel threatened or that your life is in danger, do not hesitate to call 911.
